Coffee Talk | Currently Loving…Rothy’s & Skincare Favs

Blank Instagram Landscapes-4

Checking-in:

Happy Monday! How was your weekend? We had a more hectic Saturday with the opening day of Little League yesterday which included a parade, team photos, and two baseball games. I love watching the kids play sports, especially one that they love so much but it was a long day for everyone.

It is a quick season that is jam-packed but I always miss it once it is over. We are in a league that is made up of a few different smaller towns so we always meet new friends. It also feels fun to be a “part” of a team without the stress of actually having to play the game…I always liked being on a team just for the camaraderie but not really the sport playing part…such an athlete over here! 😉

Yesterday we had a lazy day around the house. We had friends over in the morning and the kids played outside with the neighbors in the afternoon and I read on the porch, I would call that a win!

Currently Loving…

Rothys

My Rothy’s!! I don’t know what took me so long to try them, but when a friend sent me a link for $20 off my first order, I had to try them!  I love having ballet flats to wear in the spring but I have a hard time finding any that are comfortable and durable! Rothy’s are washable and lucky for me, I was able to put them to the day the very first day when I  was wearing them and also cooking dinner. Let me tell you, they were a breeze to throw in the wash the grease stain came right out! And they still look just as good as the day they arrived.

They are super comfortable and fit true to size for me but I have heard some people think they run a tiny bit small so keep that in mind. I am an 8.5 and that is what I ordered. I chose The Flat in the charcoal color but I was also tempted by The Loafer style, particularly in the Safari print. Have you tried these?? If you would like $20 off your order you can use my referral link HERE.

10 Things To Tell You Podcast

I have been loving the 10 Things To Tell You Podcast by Laura Tremaine. I especially loved her episode about skincare with Jamie Golden. I shared about my skincare routine back in December and while I still use all of those items…I have added in a few more as I have learned more about skincare and anti-aging routines.

I am specifically loving these things…

Differin Gel

Screen Shot 2019-05-06 at 6.00.13 AM

I have been using Differin Gel. Yup, I am in my mid-30s and I still have acne, specifically hormonal acne. While I have gotten it pretty under control there were still a couple popping up every month that were mostly annoying more than anything but sometimes could actually be quite painful.

After reading hundreds of reviews online I decided to go for it a few months ago, and I have been so impressed! My skin is used to a retinol cream which helps your skin cells “turnover” so that might have helped but basically Differin causes a similar effect..resulting in clearer pores from the inside out. I only use a tiny amount and just put it on my T-zone and chin because I found it was causing my nose, specifically underneath it to get super dried out. So far so good!

Paula’s Choice Niacinamide Booster

404ee0b6-f3d1-474d-a07a-218eaa8dc529._CR0,0,300,300_PT0_SX300__

To help retain moisture, Niacinamide has been a game changer! If you want to hear exactly how it works, Jamie explained it SO well in the above podcast episode in a super easy to understand manner…but this is what it is known for:

Also known as vitamin B3, niacinamide works with the natural substances in skin to visually refine large pores, fine lines + wrinkles, promote even skin tone and replenish its moisture barrier to help hold onto hydration.

Especially because I have been using something in my routine that is drying, moisturizing effectively has been SO important.

Sometimes I get a little overwhelmed because while I love skincare I feel like a real rookie and this episode was the first time it all really made sense to me and didn’t sound like a foreign language when she was explaining it!  I have been adding a few drops to my current face lotion (Countermatch lotion) and it has been a great addition.

Pixi Glow Tonic

Glow_Tonic-250ml-10SEP18-Teen-Vogue_large

Finally, I have been learning more about chemical exfoliates which sound scary but they are actually way less irritating than physical exfoliants. While I think there is a place for both, I am so happy to know about something that works so well without being so abrasive. I have been applying this with my (clean) fingertips or using a reusable face pad like these below…

Green Estate Reusable Pads

91m-6gC9TtL._SX522_

These bamboo pads are so gentle and have been great to use with face washing or applying toner and I love that I can wash them and use them again.

We have been counting down the days until Chernobyl on HBO is released and tonight is the night! I obviously cannot stay up until 10pm so we will probably watch it tomorrow but we have heard great things.

Coffee Talk | Currently Loving… | Travel Edition

Blank Instagram Landscapes-4

Checking in:

Hello from sunny Florida! we are away this week visiting family on the gulf coast. After a long Vermont winter and a busy work season for Lucas, it feels great to have a week together as a family. We have been spending a lot of time finding shark teeth at the beach, eating delicious food and swimming in the pool.

Coffee Talk, Vacation Edition!

This week I thought it would be fun to share some things we are loving while on vacation…

White Noise Machine:

At home, we sleep with sound machines, something we started when our kids were babies and we have really grown used to ourselves over the years. When we travel we love using the White Noise Ambience app on our phone. We downloaded it when we were traveling when our first son was a toddler and we have used it ever since!

Screen Shot 2019-04-24 at 8.56.16 PM

We really love the “white noise” selections that provide a constant soothing sound. We have grown to used to sleeping with a sound machine now and this provides great noise canceling from any nearby sounds…especially helpful at a hotel or resort and just makes it so much easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.  There are so many sounds you can choose from, but these are our favorites…

UV Protection Sunshirt:

UV sun protection shirt

I love the sun but I don’t love being in it. I am very careful about sun exposure due to having very pale skin but I don’t like when it stops me from wanting to do things where you can hide under an umbrella. I finally decided a sunshirt was the way to go and now I will never go back! I found this UV sun protection shirt and it is perfect! It is great coverage, not too loose and not too tight and has kept me totally sunburn free the last two days in the Florida sun. I am a size 8/10 and I got a size large for reference.

036-5876-1270-50-yyy

We are in the Venice area so we have been on the hunt for fossilized shark teeth at the beach, and so this means we have been in the water most of the day. Between this shirt and a great sun hat….I feel super covered while also still being able to have fun in the sun! And look at all our treasures!

Scout Packin’ Heat Makeup Bag:

I have a serious addiction with Scout bags. I have one for my work bag, one for a weekend away and the bag I use every day, my makeup bag!

71MNyRhAG2L._SX522_

Like all things Scout, this thing is rugged and wipes clean which is a major plus with any bag but especially with a makeup bag. I love that it has the side pocket which is great for makeup brushes and it is a perfect size to carry everything I need.

My Kindle!

kindle.png

I couldn’t write this post without talking about my beloved Kindle Paperwhite! I am going to write a much more detailed post soon about all things Kindle, but for now, I thought I would share why I love it so much for vacation.

I used to bring ALL THE BOOKS on vacation. I like reading new releases which often means I have hardcover books either from the library or from the bookstore. On our honeymoon, I brought 9 hardcover books, and I read them all…but oh man, that was a lot of extra weight!

Kindles are life-changing for this! I brought hundreds of books to choose from (hello Libby app!) on our current trip, but they only weigh less than half a pound. 😉

Alright, that’s all for today! I will be back soon with more vacation updates and my regular book chatter. <3

Coffee Talk WEDNESDAY!

Hello! Do you notice anything different around here?! I feel like I have been trying to fit a square peg into a round hole with having Coffee Talk Tuesday. Absolutely NO ONE cares what day I post this, but I work best by external motivators so having a day I do things keeps me accountable.

Do you have a day of the week that always feels more frantic than the others? Tuesday is that for me. It is a shorter school day which means everything else is crammed into fewer hours and this blog, as much as I love, doesn’t always end up being my top priority. And I love sharing what I am currently loving, so I am devoting an entirely new day to it!

I often end up starting these posts (or any posts on here) and needing to come back to finish it later. I have this fantasy of writing pre-scheduled posts but I don’t know… I could do that with reviews and but I really like the journaling in real time aspect of blogging like this. Maybe it is because I was a “blogger” 10 years ago too and that is how it was done! I miss those days, times were so simple. 😉

Do you still read a lot of blogs? I still follow a ton on “Bloglovin” which I don’t think is entirely user-friendly but I like that it lets me know when blogs I follow are updated. I miss Google Reader and I was so sad when they shut it down because I haven’t found anything that compares…it was the best!

Alright, enough of that…on to what I am currently up to this week…

First, I need to give a shout out to the 24/7 chat support at WordPress! As I have been working on making this blog more user-friendly, content heavy and sometimes just more pleasing to the eye, I have had A LOT of questions. They are so helpful! It’s so nice to have immediate help even at 5 in the morning…So if you have a WordPress blog and have no idea what you are doing too…check out the help section!

I am also loving all the sunshine this week, it truly makes such a big difference. We have had winter weather here since November and although it doesn’t look like spring quite yet, just having the longer days and some sunny days is so good for your soul and your mental health!

case-against-adnan-syed.png

We have been watching the HBO documentary about Adnan Syed and it is totally making me want to listen to Serial again! It has been so long that is hard for me to remember all the details. Like a lot of people, it was the first podcast I ever listened to and it opened my eyes to a whole new world of content!

inventor-listing-800x451.jpg

We also watched The Inventor: Out For Blood in Silicon Valley and now I really wanted to read Bad Blood. Have you read it? I have heard such great things!

Currently eating…

Well, I am not currently eating this but we have been on a poke bowl kick from The Scale lately and oh my gosh, it is just the best lunch ever! I have mine with salmon or tuna and Kristy likes chicken. We don’t get them a lot but is a fun lunch treat and is always so filling.

Today I had a mozzarella burrata ball, carrot sticks, and 4 thin mints, so you can’t win them all…but it was delicious!

I love listening to non-fiction on Audible and I am so excited to start this new book that was recommended by a reading friend. After being very disappointed by Girl, Stop Apologizing (review to come soon!),I am so excited to be moving on to something I think I will connect a lot more with.

Molly Millwood is a local psychologist and I am so looking forward to her conversation in To Have and to Hold regarding motherhood and marriage…As someone who struggled immensely during the transition to parenthood, I can so relate to how the addition of a small baby can rock your world in such a life-changing way.

“A clinical therapist’s exploration of the complexities of early motherhood, including its impact on a marriage, in a book that offers comfort, camaraderie, and practical guidance to new mothers.

When Molly Millwood became a mother, she was fully prepared for all that she would gain: an adorable baby boy, hard-won mothering skills, and a messy, chaotic, love-filled home. But she didn’t anticipate what she would lose: an identity, a baseline level of happiness, a general sense of wellbeing. And just when she was feeling her most vulnerable, her happy marriage-long a bedrock of stability and comfort-seemed to shift in unexpected ways too, tinged by anger and resentment.

As a clinical psychologist, Molly knew her experience was a normal response to a life-changing event-she was not broken, and neither was her marriage. But without the benefit of such a perspective, many of women she saw in treatment grappled with shame, self-doubt, and fear-all the while struggling to confide in, trust, or seek comfort in their partners.

In To Have and To Hold, Molly illuminates the ways in which motherhood impacts a woman emotionally, psychologically, physically, and professionally as well as how it impacts the stability and harmony of her relationship. Along with the arrival of a bundle of joy comes thorny issues such as identity, control, autonomy, and dependency. And these issues are, most often, experienced within the context of an intimate relationship, adding another layer of complication, conflict, and confusion to an already challenging time.

As Molly examines the inextricable link between women’s wellbeing as new mothers and the wellbeing of their relationships, she offers information and guidance to help readers reclaim their identities and repair their relationships. A blend of personal narrative, rigorous research, and stories from Molly’s clinical practice, To Have and To Hold provides a lifeline to new mothers everywhere.”

That’s all for today! I hope you have a great rest of your Wednesday. <3

Coffee Talk | Currently Loving…A New Photography Workshop, Green Tea & Thin Mints

blank instagram landscapes-3

Hello! How is your week going? I always feel like the week after school break feels like a constant cycle of catch up. We are also heading into our busy season with work which means we have a lot of things coming up to plan for which is exciting and also a little nervewracking. I find the anticipation of something always much with stressful than the actual events so I just need to remember that. 🙂

We are teaching our intermediate photography class this weekend which is always so much fun and I can’t wait to see everyone again! We are also teaching another Your Life Your Memories class in April since our last one was very successful!

It also inspired me to get caught up on my photo printing and I can’t wait for my Chatbooks order to arrive in the mail!! If you haven’t taken advantage of the discount code yet you should before it expires this week! It is code BOOKWORM for $10 off your first Chatbooks order. You can find more info HERE.

On a semi-controversial note… I used my March Audible credit to get Girl, Stop Apologizing. Now, in all honesty, I struggle a lot with some of the actions Hollis has taken during the last year since her first book was released. I understand the controversy and have really had a change of heart about my initial (more positive)feelings I had when I read her first book, Girl, Wash Your Face at the beginning of 2018.

I did find Girl, Wash Your Face to have some inspiring moments (and some that made me cringe) but it was also written before she had the social media empire she has today. I loved how her book talked about not caring so much about what other people think, setting and working hard for your goals and not canceling on your own self-care.

Unfortunately, once I started following her on social media, this all felt like a total scam. The idea that we can all have the “American Dream” if we just work hard, is so unbelievably out of touch if privileges are not accounted for first…

It is absolutely unfair to say that you can have her “lifestyle” by working “hard” when so so many people juggle so much and are barely making it by. Are they just not working hard enough? No. I think you can still share advice but I think having some perspective is necessary. She also sets up this idea that nothing is ever enough, and we should always be striving for more which I think is a very dark path to follow.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with setting big dreams for yourself, but I also disagree with some of the ways she is getting herself there…These articles summarize some of my feelings in a much more eloquent way than I could so check them out if you are interested…

Girl, Get Some Footnotes: Rachel Hollis, Hustle and Plagiarism Problems

I am going to listen to this out of curiosity and also to have my own impression of her book. I try very hard to review books with an open mind but I also will be looking at this book through a different lens now. I hope to report back soon with my thoughts on this book.

IMG_6065.jpeg

So much green tea! I love having caffeine all day but I am really trying to limit my coffee drinking to just the morning time…which is a work in progress. 😉 I love drinking warm tea this time of year and it is just such a cozy routine, especially when I am working from home.

Currently eating…

IMG_6491.jpeg

Every year I say I am not going to buy them and then they appear at our house at the end of February… I am a thin mints lover and they are even better when you eat them right from the freezer. What is your favorite Girl Scout Cookie?

IMG_6378.jpeg

On a more healthy note…I recently became a subscriber of Care Of Vitamins. Yes, I have totally listened to way too many podcasts lately because their advertisements totally worked on me…and their $40 off your first order was a big incentive to try it out.

I am a huge vitamin lover but I also struggle with them always running out at different times and the number of bottles in my fridge is a little out of control! This is the perfect alternative for me and I loved that I was able to personalize the vitamins to my needs. I now have a monthly delivery that includes a multivitamin, probiotics, omegas and more. They will be perfect to travel with and although I love my AM/PM vitamin container but I won’t miss lugging it around in my carry on baggage. 😉

I will report back in a couple of months and share if I am still loving them!

Coffee Talk Tuesday on Wednesday | Currently…

I always have the best of intentions on school vacation weeks, but the reality is, not a lot gets done…While I love sharing on this blog, it isn’t my first priority my work time is very limited…but I love sharing what I am currently loving, so here is Coffee Talk Tuesday Wednesday!

best-of-both-worlds-podcast.png

I listen to a lot of podcasts during my commute and work time, which I haven’t been doing alone this week like I normally do. This means I haven’t been listening to many true crime podcasts because you know, they probably aren’t the best things for kids… 😉

But I have been catching up on one of my favorite parenting podcasts, The Best of Both Worlds and the boys have really been enjoying it too. Normally we listen to But Why but we are all caught up. We usually have a 20-25 minute drive if we are going into town which means the ride is long enough that there is some whining and asking “when are we going to be there?!” which means podcasts are the perfect distraction. We can usually listen to a whole episode roundtrip because many episodes are around 50-55 minutes.

We listened to the episode about Life and Household management systems yesterday and the boys were intrigued. They especially liked hearing about their bedtime routines, especially when they heard some of their kids go to bed at 9! I assured them they are a lot older…which may not be the case but it worked. We have an 8pm bedtime around here and I want to really appreciate that while it lasts!

c4db7c43ce9a74a206a336c13f124897ac676b296be98fc2a376bcc800dc4868a8f52b725b73ca55a50a19fccd1e7a5a6737488f02c09a207b59aa7032c2e07a.jpeg

I did start Over My Dead Body when I was folding laundry last weekend and I have enjoyed it so far.

Currently watching:

This commercial, it makes the photographer in me laugh out loud every time!

We are also very into our backyard bird feeders. I never realized how entertaining they could be but it’s been pretty great. We have them outside the back of our house which we can see from our kitchen and dining room which makes them very easy to keep an eye on. We have had all kinds of visitors, even some wild turkeys which were quite exciting!

This guide has been great for identifying our avian visitors and the boys have been keeping a chart to track which ones come by. Winter is such a great time to watch birds because they are so easy to identify with so little color around this time of year. We also have started to see some robins which mean spring isn’t that far away!

Screen Shot 2019-02-27 at 6.45.01 PM.png

I don’t love shopping for swimsuits(does anyone?) but we are going to Florida in April and I figured I better find something. I checked out the Target BOGO swim sale online and I struck out with one but I did find a suit that I really love! I am a one-piece kind of person and this suit is super cute. I am definitely more pear shaped and this fits well and has good coverage without feeling like too much of “mom suit”… For reference, I am a size 8-10 and I ordered a size large. It seems really well made and I like that the bra cups are sewn into the suit (I really dislike when they are the ones that come out and get all scrunched up).

That is all I have time for now but I will be back next week for more things I am currently loving. <3

Checking-in:

Good morning! I hope your week is off to a good start. My last week was busy with work obligations which always makes everything else harder to fit it. I have been feeling like a little bit of a slacker with reading. I love having a book blog but I do have a hard time not feeling the pressure to constantly share new books. I want it to be authentic and with that comes times when I have more to share and sometimes less. 🙂

Pleasure Reading:

I have been doing some “pleasure reading” the last few days and it’s always nice to just read to escape for a bit. I am currently reading Class Mom by Laurie Gelman and it is super funny and totally relatable as a mom of kids in school. Have you read it? She has a new one coming out this summer called You’ve Been Volunteered so I thought this was good motivation to finish her first one.

The Nightstand Series:

If you are looking for more suggestions or more varied recommendations, I would recommend checking in here on Fridays. If you haven’t seen it already, I have a friend book recommendation series, The Nightstand Series, and I am hoping it offers some new viewpoints for both different genres and also a new perspective.

I am up to date on The Cold Podcast and I am now listening to The Happy Face Podcast, another true crime one. This one is about Melissa, who is the daughter of a serial killer. I know these kinds of things are not for everyone but I really find it interesting to hear about the history of people and what kinds of things might have happened in their early lives and how it affects them today.

believed_podcast-tile-1-_sq-42fcbb856afa11be104260b615ae8c61fa96ab7f-s700-c85

I am planning on listening to Believed next. “How did Larry Nassar, an Olympic gymnastics doctor, get away with abusing hundreds of women and girls for two decades? Believed is an inside look at how a team of women won a conviction in one of the largest serial sexual abuse cases in U.S. history. It’s a story of survivors finding their power in a cultural moment when people are coming to understand how important that is. It’s also an unnerving exploration of how even well-meaning adults can fail to believe.”

What are you watching?

I am actually watching something! Last night we started the Ted Bundy Tapes. Documentaries are one of my favorite things to watch, which I suppose is why I enjoy listening to true crime podcast series as well. Is anyone else watching this?

What are you eating?

On Sunday I tried out a new recipe for Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup.  It was a little time consuming so it would be better for a weekend meal but you should try it out. It was amazingly delicious and made easier by starting with a rotisserie chicken that you then use to make the broth (why it tasted like you cooked it all day).  It was the perfect winter comfort food and very filling. We had it again last night as leftovers and it was even better then! I couldn’t find the noodles she suggested but these are available at our local grocery store and were perfect and didn’t get soggy at all which I think is why she suggests using heartier noodles.

Same old same old over here. I do love winter clothing. There is nothing better to me than a pair of jeans and a comfy sweatshirt and cozy socks. I loved being at our photography class the other day and looking around the room…almost everyone in there was wearing darn tough socks too, real Vermonters know how to dress for the weather. 😉

We have a weekend with no plans and I can’t wait! We are planning on doing some ice skating, making a bonfire and making some tasty apps for the Superbowl. I am not a fan of football but I do love party food!

I hope you have a great rest of your day. <3

Good afternoon! Is anyone else forgetting which day of the week it is? The kids had a long weekend from school for MLK Day and I have been feeling confused all day…It also means trying to fit everything into a 4 day work week which usually means there is a lot of juggling going on…

With the holiday break just a few weeks ago and a random snow day, I really am looking forward to having a full week of school at some point soon…Figuring out how to juggle work and kids in school is a constant challenge as their schedules and mine are somewhat inconsistent but it is a work in progress!

Yesterday we embraced the day off with negative degree temperatures and had a playdate with some school friends. We are at the age where play dates consist of the kids playing (in another room) and us moms chatting, which is the best! We had many years of not even being able to have a full conversation so I totally appreciate this so much now.

What are you listening to?

I have been taking a little break from audio books and have been binging on true crime podcasts after getting some awesome suggestions last week on my Instagram post.  I listened to Bear Brook Podcast which was just fascinating and I am just a few episodes into The Cold Podcast.

We are teaching our first 2019 YLYC class this weekend and I can’t wait to meet everyone! Teaching is one of my very favorite parts of my work and I always get excited about meeting a new group of photography friends when we teach our beginner class. We have quite the class lineup this winter and spring and it is exciting to think about how much our classes have grown and being able to watch so many amazing photographers blossom in the process.

I hope you are having a great start to your week. <3

Good morning! What is your coffee order? I am sipping my regular coffee with half and half right now but if I get coffee out I will almost always get a latte…and I don’t add anything to it unless they have maple syrup and then I just have to!

I thought it would be fun to do a “what’s going on right now” post so here goes…

What are you listening to?

I am currently up to date on the Broken Harts podcast and a new one comes out today. It is so tragic but also really great journalism and I am appreciating the full look at this heartbreaking story.

What are you watching?

I am not watching anything currently but if you haven’t watched Escape at Dannemora, yet, you have to! We watched it over Christmas break and it was so good.

What are you eating?

Well, I am obviously having a Perfect Bar for breakfast because I am a creature of habit..but last night we made Pho Ga (Chicken Pho) in our instant pot and it was soooo good. We rarely use our instant pot for anything else but it is still worth it because it is amazing! I am hoping to try the sous vide egg bites in there soon and I will keep you updated!

What are you wearing?

I am so into cowl neck sweatshirts/tunics, they are cozy and are perfect to wear with jeans or yoga pants which really are the things I ever wear. Yay for a job where I can wear casual clothing!

What are you looking forward to?
