Checking In:

Good morning! I hope you had a wonderful holiday and that you have some time to kick back and relax now. We hosted Christmas Eve and Christmas so there wasn’t a lot of reading time around here but I am hoping to have a low key day today. Lucas is back at work and the kids are excited about their new gifts and are having one of their buddies over, so I am hoping the stars align for some lazy daytime reading on the couch.

A New Kindle:

I have the Kindle Paperwhite but a lot of this is applicable whether you have that or just the regular Kindle.

Kindle Book Deals

Today there are some great Kindle Book Deals, including some that are the perfect easy holiday reading, a few from my 2019 favorites list and some that are on my own TBR list.  Enjoy!!

Today’s Kindle Book Deals:

Parkland book

Parkland by Dave Cullen

Parkland is on my own TBR list and I have heard amazing things about it. I read Columbine, also by Dave Cullen a few years ago and it is one I will never forget. If you are looking for a powerful and thought-provoking read, this is a great option.

Jen Sincero

You are a Badass by  Jen Sincero

If you are looking for a book to start off 2020 with a more proactive mindset, You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero is the book to read. While her writing style might not be for everyone, some of the topics in this book are seriously life-changing. Jen Sincero is unapologetic about setting and reaching your goals using growth and abundance mindsets. I cannot tell you how much the ideas in this book have helped me in both personal and professional settings.

The only part I really disagree with is the idea that you can just “choose to just feel better when you are feeling down.”  NO. Depression, anxiety, and any other mental health issues are very real, and NOT something you can just think away with good thoughts and getting help is always okay.

I feel like this is important to share because this book was so empowering for me in SO many ways, but this part is troubling to me. So this book is a 5-star read for me with that one BIG caveat!

Colleen Hoover

Regretting You by Colleen Hoover

I know it is probably hard to believe but Regretting You was my first Colleen Hoover book EVER!! Her books have been recommended to me for years but I just didn’t know where to start. When I saw an advanced copy of Regretting You on NetGalley I knew I had to see what all the fuss was about. I was immediately drawn into the storyline and found it to be a totally engrossing read.

I was pleasantly surprised that Hoover took on some deeper and thought-provoking topics. My favorite part of this book was how it dealt with grief and loss and I loved seeing this from multiple perspectives. There is a YA romance that was enjoyable enough but also a little predictable but the other parts really shined through this for me.

The Moment of Lift by Melinda Gates

“Every society says its outsiders are the problem. But the outsiders are not the problem; the urge to create outsiders is the problem. Overcoming that urge is our greatest challenge and our greatest promise. It will take courage and insight, because the people we push to the margins are the ones who trigger in us the feelings we’re afraid of.”

Through stories from her own life and women around the world, Melinda Gates shares an inspiring book that is also a call to action for everyone. Highly recommend!

Laurie Gelman

You’ve Been Volunteered by Laurie Gelman

Parenting is hard and sometimes you just need to laugh. Humor can get you through so much and Gelman’s writing style is relatable and witty. You’ve Been Volunteered is the follow-up book to her first novel, Class Mom.

Gelman succeeds at makes light of things that most any parent with school-aged children can relate to. enjoyed that while the book was humorous she was able to address so many very real issues that parents deal with. If you have, or ever have had kids in school, you will love this one!

Camille Pagan

I’m Fine and Neither Are You by Camille Pagan

I’m Fine and Neither Are You takes on some heavy topics including substance abuse, loss, family dynamics, infidelity, the struggles of long term relationships and finding your voice, all while being a completely engaging read. Camille Pagan is one of my favorite authors and I love how readable her writing always is. You can read my full review HERE.

Lea Geller

Trophy Life by Lea Geller

Trophy Life is a fun and entertaining read that had a lot more depth than I initially expected. I was thinking that Agnes might be vapid or unrelatable but she was anything but. This book covered motherhood, friendship, disappointment, self-discovery and finding your own path in life. You can read my full review HERE.

Etaf Rum

A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum

This story follows three generations of Palestinian women who live in Brooklyn and their struggle to break the mold that generations prior have set before them. We are lucky to live in a country where it’s easy for us to advocate and vocalize opinions but it is easy to forget how many people still live in oppression.

A Woman is No Man is heartbreaking and Rum’s writing gives a voice to the many women who are still struggling to find their own. This was an eye-opening read for me and it also was a powerful reminder of how hard it can be to break the cycles that have been set in families and communities for generations. You can read my full review HERE.

Winter in Paradise

Winter in Paradise by Elin Hilderbrand

Winter in Paradise is the first book in Elin Hilderbrand’s Paradise Series that is set in St. John USVI. After enjoying the Winter Street Series so much, I was so excited to have a new one to binge on.

Elin Hilderbrand Paradise Trilogy

Book number two, What Happens in Paradise, came out this past October and I can’t wait for the final installment, Troubles in Paradise, in the fall of 2020!

Hello Sunshine Book Club Selection

The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo

The Night Tiger is on my own TBR list so I was excited to see this one as a Kindle Book Deal! I have heard great things and I am always intrigued by the books that are chosen by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine Book Club.

Holiday Reading

Who is ready for some holiday reading? I know I am! I love stocking up on kindle deals for this kind of occasion. While I read a lot from the Libby app, there is something about grabbing a kindle deal that has no timeframe for when you read it! Kindle deals are a great and low-pressure way to read things you might not normally select.

Dysfunctional Family Dramas

family dramaI grabbed A Nearly Normal Family which has been on my TBR list and I can’t wait to dive in. I had been on the fence about it for a while but when Sarah’s Book Shelves recommended it to me, I knew it was worth a shot because we enjoy so many of the same books. If you are into dysfunctional family dramas like I am, I would also suggest All This Could Be Yours by Jami Attenberg!

Inspiring & Powerful Reads

Etaf Rum A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum is on my list of top powerful reads of 2019 and The Moment of Lift is inspiring and would be a great book to start off 2020.

Easy & Engaging Readsholiday reading

I have heard great things about American Royals(* FYI this one is now $4.99) by Katharine McGee and You’ve Been Volunteered by Laurie Gelman is hilarious and relatable if you have ever had the experience of having school-aged children! You can read my full review HERE.

CoHo, A Classic & Our January 2020 Book Club Selection

book deals

After reading Regretting You, I am fulling on the Colleen Hoover bandwagon! It Ends With Us is on my list and I am working up the courage to read Verity!

The Giver is one of those classics that I am excited to introduce to our older son. He has been way into some of the books I read at his age like Hatchet and it makes me so happy.

Finally, The Gift of Failure is AMAZING and is also our January 2020 Better Together Book Club Selection! You can read more about our book club and our upcoming book discussion with author Jessica Lahey HERE.

Gen The Bookworm Kindle Deals

Kindle Book Deals!

I am a big Kindle reader but I tend to read most of them through the Libby app or Kindle deals. When I buy a full-priced book, I would much rather buy a hard copy that I can then have in my physical library to read again or share with friends. You can read my post tips to reading on a Kindle HERE and my post about reading on a budget HERE.

One of my favorite things is scrolling through the kindle deals over a big mug of coffee. Through my experience, I have found the best deals are posted on Sundays when there tends to be the largest selection of Kindle deals of the day!

Just Got a Kindle? | What to do Next! | Kindle Paperwhite Basics & Utilizing The Libby App

Kindle basics and what to do next

Kindle Paperwhite

So You Got a Kindle…

Congratulations and welcome to the club!! As a lifelong book lover, it took me a while to move over to reading ebooks, but now I am hooked! I remember when e-readers and ebooks first came on the scene in a larger way and there was this idea that hard copy books would become obsolete.

ebooks vs. hard copy books

Now that they have been a part of mainstream reading for some time now, I think everyone was able to see that they are just another option for reading and it doesn’t have to be one or the other! I will never stop buying books but ebooks have been a wonderful addition to my reading life.

What do I do now?!

Just like with any kind of technology, there is a little bit of a learning curve with reading on an eReader/Kindle but once you get the hang of it, it super easy! There are so many online resources that can teach you how to use almost anything now and the Kindle walks you through the set up similar to when you get a new iPhone.

Screen Shot 2019-07-19 at 11.32.22 AM

Once you do the initial setup, you can adjust the font style and size, the brightness of the screen, etc. All of these things are easily changed depending on your reading environment and make it so you can see the screen whether you are in bright sunlight ore reading in a dark room. Reading on a Kindle is a lot different than reading on a screen like an iPad or phone, the biggest thing is that there isn’t glare.

Changing the size of the font is as easy as tapping the screen. I like reading with a larger font but it is totally a personal preference. You tap the screen to change the page and some people prefer to not have to turn the page quite as frequently.

An Amazon Account…

The biggest thing you need is an Amazon account (you don’t need a prime account but it can be useful). You need this account whether you are purchasing books through Amazon or borrowing them through your library with the Libby app…which I will talk more about in a bit. Once you log in you are able to get reading!

Kindle…ready to travel!

IMG_0827.jpg

Kindles come with a USB charging cord that you can either plug into your computer or use with a charging block in a regular outlet. Once they are fully charged the battery lasts forever, like weeks! This is great for traveling and being on the go. Kindles have a screensaver that helps save battery life and come on after not be used for a bit.

Do I Need a Cover?

Fintie Slimshell Case for the All-New Kindle Paperwhite

Screen Shot 2019-07-19 at 11.58.42 AM

MoKo Case for Previous Kindle Paperwhite Generations (prior to 2018)

This is also a personal preference but I always feel like anything is easier to hold and protect when it has a cover. Even though the newest Paperwhites are waterproof, they just feel more protected with a cover. I also love that they automatically wake up or put your Kindle to sleep when you open and shut them. I also feel that makes them feel more “book-like”.

I have had great luck with both the Fintie and Moko cases. There are a lot of cover color and texture options so there really is something for everyone! I would say that I have had the best luck with the covers that aren’t a fabric material because they are easier to wipe down and stay clean.  And make sure to choose the option that works for the model that you have…just like with phones, the dimensions change just the slightest and the covers won’t fit properly.

How do I Get Ebooks Through The Library?!

ebooks through the library

Meet Libby! Although not every library participates, Libby is an amazing way to borrow ebooks and audiobooks for FREE! If you have used OverDrive in the past, Libby is the updated version of this and is much more user-friendly. All you need is your library card login information and password and you are good to go!

What does Libby do?

using the libby app

Libby is an app that allows you to listen to or read thousands of ebooks and audiobooks and also allows you to send them to your Kindle reading device, right from your phone!

Meet Libby PDF Guide

Back in May I worked with the wonderful technology librarian Susanna and taught a Libby Introduction class at our local library! Susanna worked hard to prepare a Libby Guide that we gave out at our class and also is available in a PDF format HERE. The first part is geared toward members of our local library(with that specific login information) but the rest of it is helpful for anyone who is hoping to learn how to best utilize the app!

In addition, Libby has a great Help Section on their website to help with common questions that come up…you can see that HERE.

I also love searching for Kindle book deals. Every day different ebooks are on sale and you can find them easily by searching “Kindle book deals” in the Amazon search bar.

I’ll Never Tell by Catherine McKenzie | Lake Union Publishing | Book Review

Book Review-45

I”ll Never Tell by Catherine McKenzie

Book Summary:

“What happened to Amanda Holmes?

Twenty years ago, she was found bludgeoned in a rowboat at the MacAllister family’s Camp Macaw. No one was ever charged with the crime.

Now, after their parents’ sudden deaths, the MacAllister siblings return to camp to read the will and decide what to do with the prime real estate the camp occupies. Ryan needs to sell. Margaux hasn’t made up her mind. Mary believes in leaving well enough alone. Kate and Liddie—the twins—have opposing views. And Sean Booth, the groundskeeper, just hopes he still has a home when all is said and done.

But it’s more complicated than a simple vote. The will stipulates that until they unravel the mystery of what happened to Amanda, they can’t settle the estate. Anyone of them could have done it, and each one is holding a piece of the puzzle. Will they work together to finally discover the truth, or will their secrets finally tear the family apart?”

Publication Date:

June 1st, 2019

Genre:

Women’s Fiction, Mystery/Suspense

My Rating:

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

My Review:

I’ll Never Tell is a well-crafted mystery that kept me guessing until the end. I’ll Never Tell follows the MacAllister family on a suspenseful journey to bring closure to an unsolved murder of a former camper that took place 20 years ago. This time of year I need books that are easy to get into and also keep me hooked and this was a great fit.

I am always drawn to books that are based at a summer camp setting (I also loved The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager!) and McKenzie was able to bring me right there with the perfect description of summer camp life. The sights, smells, and memories were on point.

McKenzie’s character development which sometimes is lacking for me in this thriller type fiction was really well done. Although the characters and family were quite dysfunctional, I connected with them and could see their perspectives. I enjoyed how the story jumped back and forth between present day and “that night” and the alternating narrators helped move the story along at a great pace. If you are looking for an engaging and quick summer read, this would be a great one to add to your list!

AND, if you are a prime member you can read this one for FREE right now on your Kindle device or reading app!

Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an advanced copy of this book.

Kindle Paperwhite SALE!

A few of you have asked if the Kindle Paperwhite has been on sale again since the $30 off sale back at the beginning of May. I have been keeping an eye on it and am excited to share that it is on sale again! Whether you will be reading in your backyard or traveling all over this summer, the Kindle is the easiest way to have access to a bunch of books while weighing as little as a phone!

Reading on the go:

Kindle in the airport

I think a Kindle is a perfect addition to your beach bag or carry-on this summer! I keep mine with me every day and find that I can add in so much extra reading time in the little chunks of waiting time during a regular work/school day. Now that summer is coming I will bring it with me when I am waiting with the kids at swim team, before an appointment or even in line in the grocery store.
